Yasai Works ("the developer") provides the Android app "EPUB Read Aloud" ("this app"). This page explains how the developer handles user information in this app.
This page describes this app only.
Storage of your books and reading data
Books you add (EPUB files) are copied into the app’s own storage area on your device. Your library information (titles, authors, covers, folders, tags, and so on), reading positions, saved positions (including a short excerpt of the text at that position), pronunciation dictionary, records of your reading and listening time, playback history (when you started and stopped playback, and the sentence at each point), and app settings are also stored on your device.
The app has no developer servers and no account system, and the developer does not receive any of this information. However, data may be stored outside your device through your device’s backup features or when you save or share files (see “Backup and deletion” below).
You can turn off the reading and listening records and the playback history in the history settings, and erase them with “Clear all history”. Playback history is deleted automatically once it is older than the retention period you choose.
Adding books and linking folders
The app adds books from files you pick in Android’s file picker, files shared to it from other apps, or files you choose from a folder you have linked. The app reads only the files and folders you choose.
When you link a folder, the app keeps permission to read that folder so it can list its contents. The app gives up this permission when you unlink the folder.
When you add files from cloud storage, the files are provided by that storage service’s app, and they are handled according to that service’s policies.
Reading aloud
To read a book aloud, the app passes the text to the text-to-speech engine set on your device (the app that turns text into speech), one sentence at a time. The voices you can choose in the app are limited to voices that do not require a network connection.
The app does not send the text of your books to the developer or to advertising companies. How a text-to-speech engine handles the text it receives depends on the engine’s provider. Please check the information and privacy policy of the engine you use.
Notifications and listening with the screen off
On Android 13 and later, the app asks for permission to show notifications the first time you start reading aloud. Notifications are used for playback controls and for messages about listening with the screen off. You can revoke this permission in your device settings. Reading aloud while the app is on screen works without it.
To keep reading aloud while the screen is off or while you use other apps, the app uses a mechanism called a “foreground service” during playback and shows a notification that playback is in progress.
The app does not request access to your location, contacts, camera, or microphone.
Advertising
This app uses Google AdMob to show banner ads at the bottom of the library and reader screens. It also shows video or other ads (rewarded ads) only when you tap a button to watch one in exchange for a reward.
Google collects and uses identifiers such as advertising IDs, IP addresses (which may be used to estimate your approximate location), information about your app interactions and ad views and taps, and diagnostic information to serve and measure ads and prevent fraud. We do not provide the contents, titles, or search terms of your books, your pronunciation dictionary, or your history for advertising purposes.
An advertising consent form is shown when required. If “Privacy settings” appears in the library menu or in the app’s settings, you can use it to change your choices. No ads are shown while you have a premium plan.
For details about how Google handles information, please see:
In-app purchases
Premium plans (subscription and one-time purchase) are purchased through Google Play’s billing system. Payments are handled by Google Play, and the app does not receive payment details such as credit card numbers.
The app checks with Google Play whether a premium plan is active, for example when the app starts, and stores the result on your device. Purchase information is not sent to the developer’s servers.
Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription. You can cancel it from “Subscriptions” in Google Play.
Backup and deletion
Depending on your device settings, the app’s data may be stored by backup services such as Google and moved to a new device, for example when you switch phones. Books you have added (EPUB files) and their covers are excluded from this. Other information (library information, reading positions, saved positions, the pronunciation dictionary, history, settings, and so on) is included. Information stored with these services is handled according to their respective policies.
Backup files you export from “Backup” in the app’s settings contain book titles and authors, reading positions, saved positions (including excerpts of the text), the pronunciation dictionary, folders and tags, and settings. They do not contain the books (EPUB files) themselves. Anyone who can open a backup file can read its contents, so please take care when choosing where to save or share it.
Removing a book from your library deletes the app’s copy and cover, along with the reading position, saved positions, dictionary entries, and history linked to that book. The original file on your device or in cloud storage is not deleted.
Uninstalling the app removes its data from your device. Device backups and files you have manually saved or shared must be deleted separately.
Children's Privacy
This app is not designed primarily for children. If you have any questions or concerns about how your child's personal information is handled, please contact us using the contact details below. We will review your concerns and take appropriate action.
